Kari & Brian Baxter - Former Board Members

by Daren Walk

Two years ago the Rochester Softball Association had a couple (husband and wife) join our Board. They gave us an a new look on what we do and added input from their friends and teammates.

Brian and Kari Baxter joined us for only two years. They were always there when we got together for meetings, tournaments and field set-up/maintenance. We are not always about field repair, but there were a couple of times when we needed to run out to McQuillan and spend an hour or so doing this or that. As for a single member joining our team, the couple aspect was awesome. We got two board members instead of one, we got a male and female point of view in addition a couple's view on different issues that pop up. These two are quite a team and one of the coolest softball couples in Rochester. Brian plays co-ed with Kari and then they each play on a Men's and a Women's team. They really reached out to a lot of Rochester softball players which proved to be a big asset for the RSA.

At the end of their two year assignments, Brian being an At-Large member and Kari a Women's representative, the Baxter's found themselves on the Mississippi more and more. They chose to step down from our board and be happy for what they had contributed to Rochester Softball. This has left a huge void on our Board, we also had one of our long-time Presidents, Mari Irish, step down as well.

Volunteer with the RSA today, you will love it. This is all we ask from the 3300 softball players that we have and we represent. We are asking our members to volunteer for just 2 years. We need you and your talents. The Rochester Park and Recreation Department finds us to be a great help on and off the field with our combined knowledge, great resources and contacts for softball with State and National softball organizations.

I've been on the board for 6 or 7 years now and I really enjoy helping Rochester Softball Grow and meeting a ton of softball players. I mainly joined to bring a web site to the RSA. This is the largest organized group of players in the state. There is no better way to get involved with the greatest sport than joining our board.

Join the RSA Board today.

Kari Baxter emailed me this response;

I thought the experience was very positive.
It really gave me a look into what the RSA is about. That you have to have all decisions, when it comes to the park aspect, ok' d and approved by Park and Rec'd and that you really have no control over what is decided by them.
When a lot of the revisions/updates were being done to the park…their was a lot of gossip going around and the teams/players really do not know what the RSA is or what they do.
I am glad that I was able to be a part of the board and also to spread the word out there about what the board does. I will continue to read your minutes and update other players on things as I hear them. I will also really encourage people to get involved and find out what it is like and be a part of the process to make change.
I am glad to have been a part of the board and may consider coming back someday.

Time to play ball …….. YET???
Getting really tired of the cold and snow…
Take care
Kari

RSA & RASC receive the "ASA James Farrell Award of Excellence" for hosting the highest rated ASA National Championship in 2006!!

While attending the 2006 ASA National Convention in Colorado Springs, Co; Becky Macken accepted on behalf of the Rochester Softball Association and the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission, the "ASA James Farrell Award of Excellence". This award is given to tournament hosts who score the highest of all ASA Tournaments in categories based from administrative guidelines, field maintenance and conditions, hosting and hospitality and basic community support. The impressive trophy will be in the concession stand this summer for anyone who is interested in catching a glimpse. Thereafter it will be at the Amateur Sports Commission.

The Cost of Amateur Sports in Rochester –

Softball is still your best bet!!!

Yes, the cost of everything continues to go up.  Our rent, our car payment, gas for that car, and yes, even recreation.  But one thing for sure, softball continues to be one of the most affordable recreational activities to play in town.  Some teams have sponsorships that pay for a part, or all of your fees, so you are the lucky ones - as the amount you have invested is even less.  Below are some figures that may surprise you!!  Now remember these are just the entry fees (or other mandatory fees) for adult summer activities and do not include:

Figures are based on entry fees and divided by the minimum # of people required to play the sport.  These amounts are the minimum that we pay per game or match:

Softball
$4.25
Volleyball
$5.00
Basketball
$7.45
Bowling
$13.00
Golf
$25.00
Soccer
anyone know?

Remember, there are many options to each sport, but we took the minimum amount.  For example; the golf fee is 18 holes without a cart.  So, before we start complaining about how expensive things are getting for our recreational activities, take a look at softball and realize how lucky we have it.  The RSA even gives you opportunities to cover your expenses by running the concession stand!  How great is that?!!!

So you want to become an RSA Board Member?

What are my duties???

ATTENTION ALL PLAYERS!!!

We need to work together to pick up our own trash.

The Rochester Park & Rec'd has asked us to take a larger part in picking up our own trash. Leaving garbage on the ground could lead to fee increases. Please make an effort to pick up after yourself and be considerate of this request.
